The Florida HIGHWAYMEN Artist JAMES GIBSON

' Lone Palm by Moon Lit Lagoon '

 Over 50 years Old!!  An early 1960 painting on UPSON Board with the Original 'Highwaymen' frame: 12" x 20" - Overall Framed 15.5" x 23.5"

By then, James had 'left' doing his 'Mono-Chromes'; the early Black & Whites and the later Two Colors. He began adding REAL COLORS!

And this painting has COLOR ...

With something special; and why we bought it! The Skies and Blue Water is 'Brush'... Everything else was 'painted' with a 'Palette' Knife!

The back; showing the UPSON Board, Original Frame, with most of the original masking tape used to cover the nails.

And the J. Gibson signature is 'scratched' into the paint... as was usually done!

An excellent example of a Classic James Gibson painting from the early 'Highwaymen' days! This is a perfect painting to begin your collection of OLD original 'Highwaymen' art; as well as to add to ones collection of 'UPSON' paintings.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am currently listing several paintings from our personal collection of over 100 'Highwaymen' paintings we have acquired from the early 1990s to today! This is very hard, since we purchased the paintings because we liked them... not to just 'FLIP', like most of the eBay sellers do. We are trying to 'down size'; however, when we fine something exceptional... we 'try' to purchase.
Now... Heron Cay Lakeview B&B INN's 'Keystone' Highwaymen's Painting...
Case in Point:  We recently acquired a Very Special Robert Butler painting... and I have so 'Fallen in Love' with this painting, that it is now my number one favorite Highwaymen painting in our collection... and nearly 'priceless': I might consider an even trade for a two or thee year old Chevy Tahoe... Forest Green with Tan, or Palomino Interior.<grin>
A 30" x 40" painting on canvas, of a classic Florida Bird... the ANHINGA, painting in 1983.
It is displayed in the most prominent location in our INN: A dramatic 35" x 45" (Framed) painting... doing what it does when not Swimming and Diving... Drying Out !
Classic Butler details: Check the strand of old, broken 'Barbed Wire' and rotting post with an old sign / marker.
The detail on this 'Bird' equals the best of the 'MASTER' of wildlife Highwaymen artists, Charles Walker: Knowing and watching Robert Butler painting (he was at two of our 'Mount Dora Florida Highwaymen' shows), this bird must have taken days to 'Render in Oil'. The feathers, especially the 'Pin Feathers' on 'HER' neck are the quality of a photograph.  And again... the Sawgrass!  You will have a hard time finding anything more Florida than 'Sawgrass': WHY ???
Responding to an initiative to find a new Florida state song, in 2008, the Florida Music Educators Association managed an online contest to find a new song to represent the state. The winning song was "Florida, Where the Sawgrass Meets the Sky,"
Another 'One of a Kind' Statement to the Expertise and Meticulousness of Robert Butler comes from the following:
The Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services works to help increase public awareness of agriculture’s central role in Florida history as well as its continued importance today.  Back in 1999, with the approach of the new millennium, the Department launched its "New Millennium Agri-Literacy Campaign."  To help with this project, the Department tapped the creativity and historical insight of renowned naturalist painter Robert Butler, who created 12 historic artistic depictions of Florida's agricultural heritage. These paintings were featured at several exhibits from 2000 to 2003, including Florida House in Washington, D.C., and the Florida State Fair in Tampa. They are now on permanent display in the Commissioner of Agriculture's office in The Capitol in Tallahassee.
