Late 1970 s - (  ~ 1978 ?) 115 HP V-4 Johnson ' 78 ' (also Evinrude / OMC )

*** 'HERE IN' begins my 'BLOG' about a Wonderful Engine that I knew Well !!  ***

It 'PUSHED' our Montauk 17 Whaler around the Abacos and Jupiter / Stuart, Florida, for YEARS !!

We Begin with an Original ' Johnson Outboards ' Service Manual for

Models: 85 HP / 115 HP / 140 HP - The ML / TL / TXL

BLOCK - CRANKSHAFT - HEADS - PISTONS & RODS - FLYWHEEL - ELECTRICAL - ++ETC.

This is ALL that is Left from 'Parting It Out' the ~ 1978 115 HP Johnson from our 'Tender'

We had spent Saturday (Summer - 2003) at St. Lucie Inlet and Peck's Lake (Stuart, FL)... We then returned 'Quickly' to our home in Palm City...

The next morning we were ready to 'take off' again... I started the engine... it was 'happily' idling at 600 rpm, as we loaded the boat... 

then it just went 'CLUNK'!!!

It 'LOCKED UP'... I could turn it 'Backwards' slightly... then it would 'LOCK UP'...

THE REST (almost) of the STORY:  I bought a NEW Merc. 115 HP... and BACK to BOATING !!!  

But I NEVER throw Anything Away!!  PLUS... I had to know 'WHAT HAPPENED" - (Engineer - Anal).  So, I 'Tore It Down' !!  First time inside one of these 'Creatures' !!  I was Not 'NEW' to the World of building ENGINES: From 'Big Block' GM (1960s -70s) to early Porsche - 356 & 911.

My first discover: WOW!! - ROLLED BEARING CRANKSHAFT / RODS!!!

Just like the early (1950s) 4 Cam Porsche 1500 Carrera... which I also knew Very Well... having had one !!

WHAT HAPPENED??  While Idling @ 600 rpm - REALLY!!... A MAIN or ROD Bearing came apart (This was 2003... I do not remember which... I THINK it was a Main)!! BUT, the end result was the Same... 'CLUNK'... It 'Gently' Locked UP !!  This was Literally, only a 'Few Minutes' (Running Time) after we had been 'cruising' along at 4500+ rpms!!  What a different ENDING if the bearing had 'let go' then !! 

WELL, 'Now What??'  -- 'Part It OUT' !! 

The 'Larger' Items... Engine Cover - Lower Unit - ETC. went years ago... the 'smaller stuff' (as Shown ABOVE) into the Warehouse:

WELL... It is Now time to 'Clean Out' the Warehouse!! 

BLOCK - HEADS - PISTONS & RODS - FLYWHEEL - ELECTRICAL - No major DAMAGE... Just AGE & WEAR...

The CRANK ???  Some Damage from the Bearing Failure... But I do not know to what extent !!
